Why use WorldSmith's D&D feat generator?

Most feat lists show you what exists but do not help you build what your character needs. This 5e feat generator lets you browse official feats with filters by source and prerequisites, or design balanced homebrew feats with power-budget guidance — stat boosts, prerequisites, and custom abilities that fit your table without breaking game balance.

Whether you need a half-feat to round out an odd ability score or a combat feat that defines your martial build, WorldSmith gives you the mechanics and the flexibility to make feats that feel like yours.

Frequently Asked Questions About the D&D Feat Generator

How do feats work in D&D 5e?⌄

Feats are optional character customization rules that replace ability score increases at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19. Each feat grants a specific mechanical benefit — combat abilities, skill proficiencies, or spellcasting options. Some feats have prerequisites like minimum ability scores or proficiency requirements.

When can you take feats in 5e?⌄

Most characters can take feats at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19 when they would normally gain an ability score increase. Fighters and Rogues get additional ASI opportunities at higher levels. Variant humans and custom lineages can take a feat at level 1. The 2024 rules give all characters a background feat at level 1.

Do feats have prerequisites?⌄

Some feats require minimum ability scores, proficiency with specific armor or weapons, or racial traits. Heavy Armor Master requires heavy armor proficiency. Elven Accuracy requires elf or half-elf ancestry. Feats without prerequisites can be taken by any character who qualifies for an ASI.

Should I take a feat or ability score increase?⌄

Prioritize raising your primary ability score to 20 by level 8 for consistent attack rolls and save DCs. After that, feats become more valuable. Exception: game-changing feats like Lucky, War Caster, or Sentinel are worth taking early if they define your build.

Can you take the same feat twice in 5e?⌄

Rules as written say no — you cannot take the same feat twice unless the feat text explicitly allows it, like Elemental Adept. Common houserules allow taking Tough, Resilient, or Skilled multiple times. Check with your DM before planning a build around repeated feats.

What is a half-feat?⌄

A half-feat grants +1 to one ability score alongside a mechanical benefit. Examples include Resilient (proficiency in one saving throw), Fey Touched (Misty Step and one 1st-level spell), Skill Expert (one skill proficiency and expertise), and Observant (+5 to passive Perception and Investigation). Half-feats let you optimize odd ability scores without sacrificing feat benefits.

How do you balance a homebrew feat?⌄

Compare your homebrew feat to existing feats with similar power levels. Avoid stacking multiple strong effects — a feat should not combine Lucky and Sentinel mechanics. Make sure the feat creates a meaningful choice rather than a mandatory pick for every build. Test it at your table and adjust if it overshadows other options.

Do you start with a feat at level 1?⌄

Variant humans and custom lineages get a feat at level 1 as part of their racial traits. The 2024 Player's Handbook gives all characters a background feat at level 1. Otherwise, your first feat comes at level 4 when you would normally gain an ability score increase.
